We cannot call ourselves a sanctuary if we are not willing to create it not just for immigrants and refugees but for our citizens as well.
With ever growing violence and intolerance in the world, it is important to me that we are a safe haven for our hardworking residents, especially children. We need to ensure that our police force discontinues racial/cultural profiling and that we monitor the diversity data for arrests and address any matters that go over the threshold of tolerance, which should be zero.
We should also be working on best practices for intergovernmental relations in our city so that we have a clear communication channel amongst law enforcement, city leaders, and the community that is transparent and has built in accountability measures. These are human rights issues and we need to be prioritizing them as such and utilizing tools such as the UN reports. Minneapolis is a global city and we have to challenge ourselves to think globally on a local level.
